Ethel @ Oct 13, 2008
normally with babies/toddlers, we adults will hv to follow their cue when it comes to '2 way
communication. Coz they will only do the signs which they r interested in. Gv him time n
encourangements'.. He'll definitely start clapping tu..

Kewl... both my kids were signers too. Many relatives were against it - they say this delays the speech
bla.. bla... I am glad I stuck to it cuz my son did not talk till he was 2.5 years old (they faulted it
on signing :P ) & it was wonderful as he was able to relay what he wanted so less frustration for
the both of us! My daughter prefered not to sign much - only in the initial stage before she could
speak and words she can't say. Gawsh, I can't stop her from talking now!
Ethel @ Oct 19, 2008
Org2 tua n ppl yg havent been reading much, mmg very sceptical abt signing.. Padahal, it has tones of
benefits!! If only they would read up n do more research.. Anyway... Nasib my parents n MIL didn't say
anything.. My MIL mmg support n my hubby now getting xcited coz Mia is really 'talking' with signs
now.. we enjoy talking to her oso..

Ya ba.. you wouldn't believe the crap I had to put up with when I started with Reuben. He is six now by
the way and has a pretty extensive vocabulary compared to many kids his age. Could it be from signing?
Maybe. But one thing is for sure, he was a late talker and signing HELPED A LOT. Have you guys sarted
getting weird stares from people yet? lol... get used to it :) It is great that your MIL supports
signing. Makes it a hell lot more easier for you. More people signing to her speeds up the process.
Avery is 2.5 years and she signed till she was about 1 years + only... she started speaking early and
speechwise now she is pretty good. So kalau urang make noise just tell them to shut up - you personally
know someone who has signer kids n they speak just fine now - better than most non-signers
even..lol..... Signing is a lot of fun once the child picks it up and actively uses it.

As for Reuben's vocab, YUP, u can give credit to signing for that.. That's just one of the benefit...
based on research conducted by NIH (US), babies who sign have higher IQ (approx 12 pts higher) than
non-signing babies.. Btw, where did u learn how to sign? u attended a workshop ka? Also, i'd love to
cut n paste some of our conversation here (abt signing) n post it in my babysigns blog/grp.. is it ok
with u??
Mona @ Oct 20, 2008
Bulih ba.. use whatever you need :) Maybe can convert some skeptics, eh? All the best with your
workshop. You are providing a service that I personally find very useful to parents and child. The only
problem is people are still not exposed to this... many aren't even aware this exist!I taught myself by
reading the book by Dr. Linda Acredolo and Susan Goodwyn. I just followed the guidlines and improvised
here and there to suit my childrens capabilities - works pretty well :) I'm a big advocate in signing.
The main concern for people is it delays the speech.... I've always thought in my son's case... he
NEVER said a word except for Mama n Dada till he was 2.5 years n mainly used signs for everything
else.... one day he just started talking. IN FULL SENTENCES - LOL! Teda la stanga masak punya speech...
everyone were so surprised. They thought bobou bah! I'm just glad we used signs cuz if he did turn out
mute at least we had a head start at communicating with him kan?? |
